The forestry sector has much to contribute towards combating gender inequalities and enhancing the full enjoyment of human rights by women and girls. By aligning CIFOR’s research with the global framework on sustainable development, CIFOR is positioning itself to contribute the knowledge and evidence needed to advance a global vision rather than to just strive for results in a piecemeal and isolated manner.
CIFOR’s research and activities are guided by a normative commitment to substantive gender equality, which combines formal gender equality with equality of outcome. We recognize that women’s rights and gender equality are not only a means to achieving other outcomes, but are integral and legitimate goals in and of themselves. We are concerned with how gender intersects with other factors of social differentiation (including generational dimensions) to position individuals within their societies and shape their opportunities, constraints and capabilities.
Gender equality and social inclusion are interwoven into each of the main areas of CIFOR’s research and engagement activities. We continue to focus on how gender equality and social inclusion affect or are affected by drivers of change in tree-based and forested landscape. Women’s access to resources and opportunities; their voice and influence in decision-making processes at various levels; and gender equitable distribution of paid and unpaid work have been central to our endeavors.
Our research and engagement strategies aim to support local women’s and men’s abilities so they can exercise their agency to redress gender inequalities. We do this by engaging with a wide range of actors, across scales and sectors, to facilitate an enabling environment for women’s rights and gender equality.
With support from the UK aid’s Knowledge for Forestry (Knowfor) program, we have been furthering gender integration and gender-responsive research at CIFOR in two ways:
- by deepening conceptual and methodological capabilities to undertake more nuanced and relevant gender analyses
- by synthesizing and disseminating current gender research, distilling lessons and disseminating them to a carefully targeted group of policy actors at national, regional and global policy levels.
We trust that the following summary and compilation of our knowledge products and engagement activities will highlight our key achievements, thanks to the support of the Knowfor program.
